Dhaka/New Delhi – In a significant financial development, Bangladesh has made a payment of $384 million to Adani Power, partially settling its outstanding dues for electricity imports from the Indian energy giant. This substantial transaction reduces the total arrears to approximately $500 million, signaling progress in long-running negotiations between the two parties.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the $384 million payment was made against what were termed “admitted” claims — invoices that have been verified and mutually agreed upon by both sides. However, nearly half a billion dollars still remain in the “claimed” category, which are currently under review and negotiation by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and other relevant stakeholders.Entrepreneur Bulletin
Adani Power supplies electricity to Bangladesh through its 1,600 MW Godda Power Plant in Jharkhand, which was commissioned specifically to serve the Bangladesh market under a long-term bilateral agreement. Since operationalization, concerns over pricing structures, fuel supply logistics, and foreign exchange pressures have contributed to billing disputes and delayed payments.
The partial clearance of dues is expected to ease pressure on Adani Power’s balance sheet and also restore investor confidence in the viability of cross-border power trade in South Asia. For Bangladesh, it represents a move to stabilize energy supply commitments amid increasing domestic demand and budgetary constraints.
Experts in the power sector have highlighted the importance of swift resolution to the remaining dues in order to prevent any disruptions in energy imports, which are crucial for Bangladesh’s industrial and urban power requirements.
Negotiations are ongoing, and both parties have expressed a willingness to reach a consensus on the unsettled amounts. The next round of discussions is expected to focus on disputed invoices, exchange rate differentials, and operational cost escalations. Home
